Unable to connect to Ghost Cast session.

I need a solution

We have used Ghost cast before without any issues.  The problem started when we upgraded to new PC's.  We now have Dell Optiplex 7010s.  When we first ran Ghost it was very slow, now all of sudden we can no longer connect to any sessions. I have insured that the boot disks have the proper network drivers and that the ports are open (even disabled firewalls).  I originally thought that it might be my network, but I have even directly connected a PC to the ghost cast server and had the same issue. It happens no matter if I use unicast or muticast. Any help would be appreciated.

We just started deploying Symantec Ghost, the clients install fine. Except on two laptops sof far, they show as installed but when clicked on "error reading machine info" is given. I have tried to uninstall/reinstall and that didn't fix the issue. What should I do??

Thanks,

I need a solution

I recently downloaded the test version of Ghost Solution Suite and created a boot CD with the wizzard.  When I boot with that CD on the above laptop it doesn't recognize my hard drives.  This machine is setup to use Intel Rapid Storage Technology and has a 32 gig SSD which is used to improve performance.  What do I need to do to get Ghost to backup my hard drive to an external harddrive?

Unable to begin session using Directed Broadcast

I need a solution

Hello!

I'm in charge of imaging client computers that are shipped out to support various events.  Hard drive images range from 45-500GB, and we often do a couple dozen per week.  This is a small company and I am the self-taught "IT guy," so I'm pretty much not an expert on anything.

I had been suffering along using multicast, sometimes taking 3 days to do a batch of 18 machines (what we consider a full set), until I found that using directed broadcast instead would allow me to get the same batch done in a few hours!  Hooray!

Well, that thrill didn't last long, because last week the seven-year-old Server 2003 machine that had been hosting our Ghostcast died.  I have put up a new machine in its place, however this new one is running Windows 7 Ultimate.  (We have hopes of resurrecting the old server, which is one reason I installed a different OS.)  Hard drive speeds are excellent, compared to the SCSI drives on the previous machine, network appears to work well, and in general I'm happy with the new setup.

The problem:  I'm not able to use directed broadcast on this new system.  Unicast and multicast work, however neither of these is adequate for pushing out the massive images we use.  When I set Ghostcast Server to force directed broadcast, the clients connect and show "Waiting for Ghostcast session to start."  On the server, I see "Ghostcast session in progress," but no data goes out.  Eventually the clients time out.

Here is our equipment:

  • Switch, HP ProCurve 1800-24G (J9028B, firmware is PB.03.04) - Does not support multicast/IGMP, static IP 10.10.1.1.
  • Server, SuperMicro 6026T-NTR+ running Win7 Ultimate SP1 with...
  • ...Ghostcast Server 11.0.2.1573
  • ...DHCP server (Tftpd64 4.0)
  • ...dual NICs, one answers to 10.10.1.2 and runs the Ghost network; one answers to 192.168.2.56 on our LAN.  I've set up this multi-home rig so that Ghost traffic doesn't flood our network but I can control the system from my desk.
  • Client machines are various hardware, but all run Ghost32 in either WinPE 3.0 or 4.0.

I have attached a Wireshark capture of a typical attempt.  In this capture, I hit "Accept Clients" and then cause two machines to connect to the session named "testsession".  The server shows the clients connected, but does not start the session.  If there is any more information I need to provide, please let me know!  I'll be back in the office January 2 and I'm eager to get this solved!

Thank you very much for your time!

Multicasting with b57.dos drivers works on all but two machines?

I need a solution

Hi there, I have a curious problem with two of the machines in the lab I manage.

When pushing an image on my machines (All Dell XPS 730X) I use the b57.dos ndis2 driver from broadcom, pushing an image works perfectly on all but two machines, which currently have an identical image to the ones that play nice with Ghost.

both computers fail to enter the virtual partition.

I have attached an image of the error message in the logs.

As far as I know, the two machines have the same NICs that the other machines have.

Any help would be very much appreciated, I find it annoying to have to unicast to these machines individually, and would love have them working like the rest of the machines.

I am trying to add a driver for an Apple USB to ethernet adapter.  It uses an Asix AX88772 driver.  I have the 32 bit Vista driver.  There is your usual .inf, .cat, and .sys files in the folder yet when trying to add the driver using the Boot Wizard I get the message Failed to import driver xxxx Failed to find any drivers to add.  I am not sure what to do next.  Other drivers install fine.

I need a solution

I have searched everywere and all the answeres say the same thing. Use the -ja=Sessionname -sure command but it just doesn't work.

I have Ghost Solution Suite 2.5 running on a Windows 7 machine connected to a Procurve 2910a1-24G switch. The windows machine is running a DHCP server. I create a boot disk and put in the command line argument at the very end. Then I launch the ghost cast server and put in the same session name and lick accept clients. I then boot the PC using the boot disk/USB drive, only to find out that it never goes past the "About Norton Ghost" page, then you have to click OK, then click on Multicast, then type in your session name, then select your drives... I don't want to have to do any of that. I am going to have to image over 80 computers next month and only have an 8 port KVM, I need to get this as automated as possible. Can anyone help?

Black screen, blinking cursor after deploying ghost image

I need a solution

We recently got some HP Compaq Pro 6300 desktops in.  We pulled the image off just fine, but when we deployed it, the computer booted into a black screen with a blinking cursor, as if the HD was empty.  We are using Windows 7 images and Ghost 11.5.

We tried to pull the image and deploy the image both using the -IB switch, but that didn't help.  We have tried all Sata Operations settings.  We are using the same machine to pull the image and deploy the image, just swapping hard drives, so it is not a matter of hardware differences.

We are using MS Dos ghost client.  We tried the WinPE client, but it doesn't include the network drivers we need, and we are having trouble injecting them manually.

We have ghosted many machines before, but we are at a loss here.  Would WinPE make a difference if we could inject the network drivers?  Any other suggestions?

DeployAnywhere error: "Platform error calling RegSetValueExw. Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service."

This is on a Dell precision T3600, on board Intel C600 storage controller. Evaluates with the success message but stops with the above error halfway through when retargetting for real.

Any ideas? This is the first time we have had a T3600 with the onboard controller, previously we had models with an add in RAID card that worked fine once i added the driver to my ghost winpe boot disc.

Could it be that Ghost does not like the image i have used (my previous t3600 image that has a RAID card)

Hi

I'm having an issue with the ghost client stopping on an XP Pro machine. From memory, it is Ghost 7.0.1.355. That should at least be close. The log in the Ghost console shows:

On the client, within seconds of the 10:02:36 entry, the service manager puts an entry into the event viewer that says that the ghost client died unexpectedly. There are no files ngerror.*. There is an vpart.txt (I'm not sure that was the name) that looks like:

At one point, this process was working. I have no idea what has changed and I also have no idea how to get it going again. Would someone please clue me in?

Something of an aside, I read somewhere about running ngctw32 -recovery and gave it a try. While the run itself successfully contacted the server, I find myself unable to get out of the app and unable to find any documentation on how to do so. Once I hit ^Break, I got the c:\ prompt, but all commands seem to get "bad command or filename" and rebooting only returns to it. How do I get out of this??? Booting off a CD and editing the partition table seems less than optimal though effective.

Thank you

I need a solution

Hello,

Before I get into my problem, I am running Ghost Solution Suite version 11.5.1.2266 on Windows Server 2008. The two computers in question are a Dell Dimension 9200 and a HP Workstation xw4300.

The problem I am having is I successfully create an image using sysprep and when I go to deploy this image to a computer that the image was not created from I get boot errors. With the Dell it cant locate a boot file and with the HP it just blue screens. I have tried doing this with XP as well as Windows 7 with no luck. Is there something I am missing? Any help would be much appreciated.

In case this is needed, here are the specs for the computers:

I need a solution

I am trying to make a simple batch file to restore a Win7 image (which is actually 2 partitions) to a hard drive from a bootable USB stick which is the C drive

The command line I am using is . . .

ghost -clone,mode=load,src=c:\image.gho,dst=2

It starts fine but then asks me if the second partition info is correct.  What do I need to add to the command line to prevent this question?

How to reimage a disk from a VERY OLD Ghost file?

I need a solution

I received a trial use of Ghost Console for evaluation of a backup and imaging project we were considering. We didn't proceed with this, but during the course of the trial created some images that (happily) never got deleted. Now we have had a hardware failure that caused loss of our backup, combined with crash of one of our user's machine, and we are trying to learn if there is a product that can allow us to reimage a system using a GHO file that was created in 2009, using Ghost Console 11.0.1.1553

Thanks in advance for advice/help!

SOHO DHCP Router gets flooded - Need suggestions on hardware

I need a solution

I have a unique implementation of GSS in a mobile lab.  We carry in a GIG switch HP Procurve 1810G-24 and a SOHO router (used only for DHCP). We are are not typically connected to an outside network.  We need to ghost 20-50 machines at once with GSS and our image is almost 50GB (fast compression).  Due to some hardware configs, we are nearly forced to use DOS.  When we do, we frequently find that ghost does not play well with the router in that it is unable to obtain a DHCP addy.

We have checked all the typical issues like lease number etc.  Some routers play, some don't.  we have tried the swith to extend the timeout for the DHCP request too and that has helped on two ocasions.

We also have machines start to fail about 30 minutes in.  I assume this is the network getting saturated.  I have not tried throttling the task but will be doing that.

Does anyone have recommended hardware that they are using and seems solid.  I have heard the Apple Airport does well oddly enough.  We may resort to bringing a server to act as a DHCP server.

Any help is appreciated.

Regards

Ken

Create a Bootable Backup Image to USB Flash Drive

I need a solution

Hello:

I am trying to create a bootable backup image to a USB flash drive. To do this I select Disk then To Image in Boot Wizard. When I do this I am prompted to select the source then destination. If I select my DVD/CD burner as the destination and back my hard drive up to DVDs or CDs Ghost creates GHO files that boot starting the Ghost Boot Wizard. It does not matter if DOS or WinPE is used the GHO files boot from DVDs or CDs. However if I repeat the process only this time select my USB flash drive as the destination Ghost creates a GHO file but it will not boot. The only way I have found to get a USB flash drive to boot with a GHO file on it is to create a bootable USB flash drive using the Boot Wizard then copy the GHO file to it. When I do this I am able to boot from the USB flash drive then backup or restore from the drive.I consider my method to be a work around and not the preferred way to create a bootable GHO file to a USB flash drive. Your assistance in helping me create a GHO to a USB flash drive that will boot would be appreciated.

GSS 2.5.1 Computer Configuration Problems

$

I need a solution

Hello,

To start, this will be a rather lengthy post.  I'll include a short summary at the bottom of this message.

Over the last month, during our semester break maintenance period for our classrooms and computer labs, we have been deploying images to our workstations.  This is our current standard practice.  Our workstations are configured with a standard base image, which we sysprep then distribute to other technicians who then add their applications and settings.  The resultant images then are gathered (and sysprepped) and deployed to the workstations.  In all cases, the images are set to DHCP during building and sysprepping, and sysprep sets them to DHCP during setup.

During this past maintenance period, there have been many complaints among the technicians deploying their images.  The one complaint I have been trying to address is about failing Configuration tasks.

Our client workstations, in most cases, are configured with static IP addresses (along with the added requirements, like subnet mask, gateway, DNS server list, etc.).  During our deployments, we have seen Configuration tasks apply everything successfully, apply hostname and workgroup only, or apply nothing.  This Configuration task problem seems to be affecting everyone.  The Configuration tasks seem to succeed 95% of the time when deploying a configuration to a DHCP-enabled workstation. The Configuration task seems to fail 100% of the time when changing the workstation object in GSS back to DHCP, then applying this configuration to a static addressed workstation.  Hostname and workgroup changes, however, are applied.  When applying a static IP configuration from GSS to a static addressed workstation, there are sometimes inconsistencies in the gateway and DNS server list that are applied on the workstation.

Every attempted task returns a "Successful" result from the GSS task log.

I began troubleshooting and attempting to reproduce the results that were reported.  I set up a GSS 2.5.1 console of my own to validate the problem.  So far, I've been able to reproduce it.

The steps I have taken are:

  1. Deploy our base image to a model workstation.
  2. Install the GHOST Console Client to the model workstation.
  3. Verify that GSS bears a Workstation object, and that object is configured for DHCP.
  4. Change the configuration from DHCP to static in GSS.
  5. Apply the configuration by a "Configuration" task from GSS to the model workstation.
  6. Watch WinPE (and PC-DOS) successfully apply the configuration and reboot.
  7. Examine the resultant configuration on the model workstation (usually successful).
  8. Apply a DHCP configuration from GSS to the workstation object.
  9. Apply the configuration by a "Configuration" task from GSS to the model workstation.
  10. Watch WinPE (and PC-DOS) successfully apply the configuration and reboot.
  11. Examine the resultant configuration on the model workstation (usually NOT successful).*

*The IP configuration may not have changed, but usually the hostname has.

Now, several changes have been made to our base image, namely from Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6 (KAV 6) to Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 (KES 8).  This change was, for the most part, untested.  It was my first suspect since the Configuration problem seemed to coincide with the introduction of KES 8.  I decided that it would be a good idea to manually apply the configuration in Windows PE myself using GHconfig32.exe and a configuration file (GHREGUPD.REG).  I also chose to attempt this configuration on a brand-new Windows 7 installation without anti-virus.  These changes yielded the same result as the above scenario.

When manually testing the application of the GHREGUPD.REG configuration I used the X:\Ghost folder to contain the file.  I used the following commands to apply the GHREGUPD.REG configuration file on my test workstations (1.2 is my [Disk.Partition] target):

ghconfig32.exe /w=1.2:\Windows /c=X:\ghost

This performed as expected when applying a static address configuration file on both the base image (with KES 8) and the fresh Windows 7 installation.  The DHCP-enabled configuration file did not yield the same result.  It only applied the hostname changes contained within the GHREGUPD.REG file and left the static IP address in place.

Here are the contents of my configuration files.  The static configuration:

 CONFIG_COMMANDS COMPUTERNAME = "THISISATEST2" "THISISATEST2" DNSHOST = "thisisatest2" "thisisatest2" WORKGROUP = "NEW" "NEW" IPADDRESS = "192.168.1.2" "192.168.1.2" SUBNETMASK = "255.255.255.0" "255.255.255.0" DEFAULTGATEWAY = "192.168.1.1" "192.168.1.1" DNSSERVER = "192.168.1.254,192.168.1.253" "192.168.1.254,192.168.1.253" DNSDOMAIN = "mycorp.com" "mycorp.com" SYSPREPMINISETUP = 0 0 END_CONFIG_COMMANDS

And the DHCP configuration:

 CONFIG_COMMANDS COMPUTERNAME = "THISISATEST" "THISISATEST" DNSHOST = "thisisatest" "thisisatest" WORKGROUP = "DINGUS" "DINGUS" IPADDRESS = "0.0.0.0" "0.0.0.0" SYSPREPMINISETUP = 0 0 END_CONFIG_COMMANDS

And finally, the output from GHConfig32.exe after executing the command (with both configuration files):

Windows: [C:] 1.2:\windows
<blank line>

I then reboot the workstation with either "exit" or "X:\ghost\ghreboot.bat" (both yield identical results when used).

If you took the time to read this post, thank you.

Has anyone else experiened this sort of problem?

SUMMARY

  • GSS 2.5.1 (11.5.1.2266).
  • Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 7.
  • Image sysprepped, configured for DHCP.
  • Configuration push from GSS console fails to revert machines from static to DHCP address.
  • Most DHCP to static address configuration pushes succeed.
  • Config files (GHREGUPD.REG) files look fine.
  • Manual application of GHREGUPD.REG via GHConfig32.exe is broken, too.  Not a network problem.
  • Antivirus is not the problem.
  • Windows 7 with no changes or updates behaves the same as the base image.
