Unexpected Error Has Occurred with PC-DOS and ISO Image

I need a solution

Hello,

I am using Ghost Solution Suite 2.5, program versions listed as 11.5.1.2266, LiveUpdate states that Ghost is up to date.

I am trying to create a Ghost Boot Disk ISO Image using PC-DOS as the PreOS and adding a GHO file to the ISO.

When clicking on Next on the Client Details window, I receive the error: "An unexpected error has occurred.  Please check that the target is not read-only and that there is enough space on disk."

I looked at the Tech Article 110486, but it does not seem to apply to the situation.

The Temp directory on this server is on its largest partition (1.23 TB with 794 GB free), and permissions are normal.  The image file being added is only 670 MB in size.

Additionally, I confirmed that creating a USB Boot Drive using PC-DOS as the PreOS and including the image functions normally.

Creating ISO Images with Windows PE as the PreOS also works normally.

Unfortunately, while I would like to use Windows PE, the PCs that this load will be used with cannot load Windows PE, and thus I would prefer to use DOS.

Can anyone point me in the right direction here as to where to even begin to troubleshoot this to get this working?  Is there some workaround to being able to create a PC DOS CD with an image file attached?

Thanks!!

How Do I Move GSS 2.5.1 From Existing Computer Onto A Replacement?

I need a solution

Hi,

I'm part of IT Support on a college campus using licensed GSS 2.5.1 for up to 4,500 clients.

One of our several Ghost Consoles resides on a PC (XP sp3 32 bit) servicing over 200 PCs which we're trying to decommission and we'd like to transfer this consoles' contents (database, etc.) over onto a newer PC model (Windows Server 2008 R2 sp1 64bit).

The existing clients had their "Ghost Client" installed within an image we use for deployment and the "Clone" flag was set.

The current existing "Ghost Console" has a "static IP".  It's been taken off the network (but its' contents are still intact) and that same "static IP" has been assigned to the newer PC.  A backup can be performed on the original (if necessary), it's just no longer broadcasting over the network.  Installed GSS 2.5.1 successfully but the existing clients are not being recognized by this newer computer.

What do I need to do to transfer over the original Console's database, etc. (hopefully resuming contact with my existing clients)?

Found Tech110251 Symantec article and made what appeared to be a successful automated backup "cab" file (using backupdb.wsf) but when I went to restore it (restoredb.wsf) on the new computer, I received a DOS window whereby steps were being executed and stopped at a "Windows Script Host" window stating "MakeCab failed to build the output cabinet, backup not taken".

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

I need a solution

I have Ghost backup with 46 files.

I was working with ghost explorer to remove some files from this backup. At one moment it stopped to work, I closed the task from task manager. Since that moment I can't access this backup with ghost explorer. With opening the backup with ghost explorer I get a message "Please, select the file for the last segment in this image file". I tryed every file of this gho backup, but nothing worked. I am still in this message and can't continue. There is an important information I need to restore. Please, provide me a solution asap. If there is no solution, that why do we need this software?

thank you in advance.

I need a solution

Hi

I am using Ghost version 11.5.1.2266 and I am trying to reimage an All-In-One that I have. The unit connects to the network fine up until I get to the point after entering the session name where it just seems to sit there trying to locate the session. I have tried creating a Ghost boot usb which worked at one point about 4 months ago but now seems to have no affect on it at all. So far it is only All in one systems that I am having this problem with; standard towers are not affected. The model numbers of the All in Ones are : MS-AC73 and MS-6637

I am not as experienced with servers as I am standard so please be gentle with the server jargon

Please Help I need to build 40 more All in Ones next month and need this working

N00B ghost32 .GHO to .VMDK

I need a solution

Hello Guys,

I am really stuck.  Trying to create a .VMDK from an image.  I tried using the VM-standalone converter with a .v2i image, but the virtual-machine it created gave me the blue-screen of death when trying to boot windows, must still be looking for some of the physical-machine hardware that no longer exists on the VM (but I thought that the converter is supposed to fix that...)

I want to try converting my .GHO image to VMDK and see if this one will work.  I have found in the forums I can use the command switch

To convert from GHO to VMDK
ghost32 -clone,mode=restore,src=my.gho,dst=myimage.vmdk -batch -sure

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/c...

My n00B question is how do I enter the command line?

I have installed Ghost Suite 11.0.5 onto my Windows XP OS (C: drive)

I have the Ghost image (.GHO) on an external USB haddrive, and I would like the .VMDK file to be created here also

Ghost Image Address: G:\vmware\Rel7.GHO

So how do I use the ghost32 command switches?

I think it would be like this from the windows command prompt (Start>Run>cmd), but something must be wrong:

                         G:\vmware>ghost32 -clone,mode=restore,src=Rel7.GHO,dst=VRel7.vmdk -batch -sure

I have tried looking through the forums and google for an example of how to use the switches, but the articles are written assuming you already know this information.

Query re Ghost v15 from Sisyphus

I need a solution

I'm groping around in the dark, struggling to find the relevant answers on Symantec's online resources.

I operate from a PC (XP Pro).  Recently the hard drive failed beyond repair.  Almost all data was recovered from backups.  However, to bettter prepare for a rucurrence of that disaster I've just purchased Ghost v15 (am afraid I couldn't find it in the product list - Ghost Solution Suite is the closest I can find).  Can you tell me if this product can be used to restore all data including OS & programs to a new hard drive in the event of any future failure of my hard drive? In other words, if I copy my entire drive (OS, all programs & data) can that be transferred to a new hard drive or would I need to install an OS on the new HD first?

Many thanks,

Sisyphus

drivers - sysprep.xml

I need a solution

Maybe I am completely missing something here, but I have done multiple ways to install the drivers, i.e DQ35MP Intel motherboard,

I want to use the intel drivers for the sotrage controller rather than the "standard IDE driver" that comes with Windows 7.
So I have a done a driverpath, to a remote server, local drive, etc. in offlineservicing, and auditsystem...

and that driver isnt getting installed, and i notice the sysprep.xml isnt getting deleted from the c: drive after its finished.

so I assume something is wrong.

but I just can't work it out, I thought it might be easlier than the XP sysprep.

I have tried using sysprep.xml in the past but failed, and giving up for a while, so dont know much about it. but I am using Windows 7 AIK to create the sysprep.xml and then importing it into the ghost - sysprep configurations.

But I really do like the idea of installing drivers from the network, so then I can just add drivers to the share and use them without doing a reclone, like I did with the XP images. But I can't get that to work neither.

Is there a way to enable diagnostic, or show whats happening? - as I am not sure.

thanks
Pete

How to create an image with Ghost 2.5

I need a solution

I am brand new to using Ghost.  I have read the manual but am encountering an issue that I can't figure out how to solve.  I have 10 Dell Optiplex 7010, I have one set up with all software and preferences that I want and I would like to create an image and drop on the other 9 machines.

I create a bootable USB drive to boot the PC to

I created an image of the PC I want to image by booting to USB drive then doing Local/disk/To Image (I chose Disk 1 as my source)

I saved the image to a USB External Drive

I then booted one of the other PCs to the USB drive

I did Local/Disk/To Disk and selected the image from the External Hard Drive

It dropped the image

but when I booted the PC up it says no bootable drive.

Not sure what I'm doing wrong.  I also tried to do it by using Disk 80 as my source, but I don't think that is what I need to do, it won't let me do this anyway tell me Access Denied error.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks :)

I need a solution

Hi

Running gss 2,5 on server 2008r2, mixed mode AD, both 2003 and 2008r2 dom ctrl.
Imaging win7 32bit, syspreped.
In the task log I get warnings when the task creates the machine account:
Unable to create administrative connection to domain controler xxxxx etc.

The error shows up in a random number. Ex. Imaging 20 machines, 8 will fail. Trying again now 6 machines will fail and not the same machines.

If I run a configuration job to join the machines individually with the same configuration setup as obove,no errors.

Does anyone have any suggestions

I need a solution

Hi

I had some trouble when I first was using GSS 2.5.1 build 2266.  Ghost would hang when running from a oneclick virtual partition on a Dell optiplex 740.  I report this problem while I was under a support contract and we did not find a solution.   Now this problem has re-surfaced and I have been searching for a solution again.   I see that there is a patch 2269 that "might" fix my problem.   Where can I get this patch???   Note:  I have not been maintaining support on ghost since a fix to my problem was not provided in a timely fashion.   I do believe that this patch (2269) was released during my year of support.   I feel I deserve this patch.

this was my case # when I reported the problem.   Case# 413-144-533

Thanks

Greetings all,

I just installed Symantec Ghost Console on a windwos 8 pro box and am having great diffuculty in getting an image created.  This is what happens..

- The client is connected to the console just fine

- I start the image process and the client machine reflects the message and seems to be connected to the server without issue.

- After the reboot and the client is in preos the dos screen reflects the executed processes.

- The client seems to hang and start polling for the bound server at the 7th task

Has anyone had this issue and what is the fix.  I'm stuck and am trying to deliver images to test in a pilot tomorrow.

Thanks for any help you may be able to offer.

"Could Not allocate page table memory" on Seagate HD's only

I need a solution

Ok,

So I have done plenty of research on Nigel's response and what the past forums have talked about with the Dell known issues. We are usiing the latest version of Ghost. Trying to capture an image of an HPZ220 (Win 7) from it's native Seagate 2tb drive over the network and storing that image on the server. Everytime I try to capture the image, pxe boot on the client, DOS boot / 3COM proxy, TFTP DHCP services on the ghost server machine (HP8400 running Server 2008). Never have any issues ghosting to or capturing from any WD drives but anytime a Seagate is involved it errors out at 99%. I can ghost a new image onto the Seagate, for example: I rebuilt the host image after swapping the Seagate for a WD250g and it captured fine and even pushed out to the other Z220's with their native Seagates just fine. The problem only arises when trying to capture the image from the Seagate HD. I've made a lot of changes to the image and would like to be able to recapture it as it sits without having to swap the WD back in and try to rebuild a like version. Not sure if I've given you enough information but hopefully this can get me started in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cannot create Windows PE unless domain admin

I need a solution

I have symantec ghost 2.5 on a Windows Server 2008 with a user called "test" (this is just an example) that is not part of the domain admin group in our Active Directory. I added this user to the local administrator group on the server. When he/she tries to create a windows PE he/she is getting an error that  "The ISO could not be created. Please verify that the destination path is writable." It then gives a "blank" message pop-up, then quits. When I try this exact same procedure with a domain admin I am able to create a Windows PE without issue. The destination is an iso image that is on the desktop and I have the non-domain admin account part of the local admin group on the server. There is plenty of space on the disk as well and the Symantec Ghost software is fully updated. I attached a few screen shots to show what is happening as well.

I am trying to get our techs access to this server so they can perform these tasks without having to add them to the domain admin group. Could someone help me with this.

I need a solution

Had Norton ghost doing backups to a nas drive via iscssi working like a charm,

needed to mount the recovery point using the symantec recovery point browser to restore some files which are encrypted hence i cant do a normal recover from the recovery point browser. When recovery point browser tries to mount the image as a drive which is over 1tb in size it pops the following error

checked with live update and all is uptodate acording to it.

any one have any ideas on how i can mount the image?

I can however mount a image which is smaller than 1tb on the recovery browser and it works.

any help will be appreciated.

I need a solution

I am working with Ghost 11.5 and would like to automate our Ghosting process. I have PXE boot set up and can initiate an image task from a client computer. I would like to be able to do this with multiple computers. If I have one computer running the reimage task, I have to wait for that one to finish before I start another. Is there a way to reimage multiple computers using PXE boot and console?

Thank you

Create Ghost Boot CD/DVD for Restoring/Creating Archives to Isilon

I need a solution

Hello,

I'm sure there must be a thread on this issue but I could not find it anywhere in the search. So I updated my account information and decided to create a new thread/post.

My environment:

Symantec Ghost Console: 11.5.1.2266

Scenario: I have a Dell 2950 Windows Server 2003 with HW RAID.  6 drives: 0,1 (RAID 0) C$ (System drives).  2,3,4,5 (RAID10) D$ application/data drive.  Dual static IP's (DHCP is not available)  Isilon mass storage available.

I am building a server that will be deployed to a stand alone, secured network.  Prior to shipping the system, after everything has been finalized, I have created an 8+ GB .GHO (with Ghost compression) file from the Ghost Console to the server's D$ drive.  It restores like a champ, no problems, very cast (from D$ to C$) when using the ghost console.

However, when I followed the instructions here (as there will be no Ghost Console available):

http://service1.symantec.com/support/on-technology.nsf/docid/2008110412374160?Open&seg=ent

I was puzzled by the lack of .ghs files and only a .gho. How do I split the existing .gho file into 2 GB segments as stated in the instructions?  Or is it not/no longer required? Can I simply use ImageBurn and span the .iso across 3 dvd's and Ghost will prompt me for the rest of the .gho file on the other disks that the .gho resides?

With this confusion, I decided to simply create a boot CD/DVD to either boot and restore using the .gho file stored on D$.  But then, to protect from a complete failure, I want the boot media to have the option (or perhaps create a 2nd boot media) to connect to the Isilon (fixed IP) to restore the image across the internal network. Has anyone done this?  The field SE needs to be able to do this to both restore to the image in the event of a failure, but also will need to re-snap a known good image after patches/upgrades to either the D$ (to be moved to the Isilon) or directly to the Isilon (So I will need to create boot media to do this).  I thought this would be easier than maintaining many DVD's, somehow splitting the .gho (if that's what I now need to do) into many .ghs files.

Thanks very much for any and all help in advance.
